Why invest in an AED defibrillator?

Knowing CPR is good, but having an automated external defibrillator (AED) is better.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen to anyone at anytime. It can occur in the gym, in the airport, at work, or at the shopping mall. It happens to both young and old, healthy or less healthy.

The closer an AED is to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest, the greater the chance of survival.

Mere seconds can mean the difference between life and death. There are many barriers than can create a prolonged response time from the ambulance: heavy traffic, long distance, multiple buildings, high-rise office towers or apartments, and large venues. Even with the best training and equipment, their hands are often tied by time. Having an AED available means providing life saving treatment even before the ambulance arrives.

Is there a high risk of someone having cardiac arrest at your organization? If you have a large number of people in one place, the Heart & Stroke Foundation estimates that approximately one cardiac arrest will occur for every 100,000 life-years. To calculate the number of life-years, multiple the number of people by their average age. For example, 2,000 workers, at an average age of 40, would be 80,000 life years. An organization with 80,000 life years would expect approximately one cardiac arrest per year. In addition various people are at a high risk for cardiac arrest such as the elderly, people with high levels of stress, and individuals with poor lifestyle choices (smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet).
